Whale Song, Oil Pastel On Paper, 11” x 15”

Statement

My drawings are energetic explorations between the balance of a meditative awareness, the universe within and visceral sensations of drawing on paper. Inspiration initially comes through doodles on notepaper which evolve into drawings using a Sgraffito technique. It’s a process of applying layers of oil pastels and then scraping pigment away, like sculpting with wet clay.  There’s a playful childlike quality in allowing discovery and chance to guide the emergence of unexpected colors and forms that I find liberating. Through this messy festival of color, darker colors over light reveal vivid hues underneath. I think of the drawings becoming dimensional objects in space that broadcast their own feeling or tone.  Drawing is a spiritual act of communication that weaves threads of memory or dreams toward the realization that we are all interconnected.
