Drawing as a Spiritual Act

Drawing is a spiritual act.  The act of drawing crosses a threshold from the ordinary world to the non-ordinary world where anything is possible. For me it’s about the manifestation of energy, movement, color and form.  Transmitting that sense of energy is my goal. I think of drawing as an extension of energy from my body and creating a palpable sense of it on paper.  In my work as an acupuncturist,  this energy, also known as Qi courses through us, activated when needles are placed like gateways into the body.  Meridian pathways are opened, expanded and the Qi- energy moves where the body’s innate intelligence directs it to go. The body rearranges itself, molecules are rearranged, emotions are unburdened and there’s often a shift in perspective. A new awareness emerging. A new homeostasis created. Drawing, like acupuncture, is a spiritual act of interacting with the the body and subconscious mind.

There’s a sense of joy when graphite, crayon or brush moves across a blank page. The medium becomes part of the message. Color, lines create a palpable energy expressed in the process of drawing.  It’s a communication in a visual language. Sometimes I’ll see a shape in my mind’s eye, but more often the image evolves from the paper. A common theme is a spin from a central axis just as I imagine energy moving within us and our chakras. Sometimes it’s a descending energy, sometimes it’s an energy rising up from within. Stepping back, hands as my guide, energy moves through me like breath or spirit. It’s the spirit which fills us all full.  I suppose this is a lofty ideal that I strive to achieve in my work.

I consider these drawing works as works in progress. Explorations of color, form with a feeling tone of energy moving, creating and healing.  Imagery from my minds-eye, this energy is always waiting to be expressed for guidance in the everyday mundane world. I think of it as energy attempting to pierce the veil of our awareness and consciousness. Information is coded within this energy that’s expressed within our bodies.  Our job is to allow energy as we see fit to move within and decide how it can help move forward in our lives.
